The New Negro: Manifest Destiny

What is Manifest Destiny? Propounded during the second half of the nineteenth century post slavery, the concept of Manifest Destiny held that it was the divinely ordained right of the Negro to build their own free nation and protect it by any means necessary.

For this artist, inspiration came from the aesthetic and political legacies of thought leaders from the Harlem Renaissance, and “The New Negro: Manifest Destiny” is a body of work that provides a blueprint for what building our own nation looks like.

“The main takeaway from this exhibition is that if we truly want to be a free and independent people, we need ALL of our most brilliant minds working together towards the same goal of Black Liberation”, says James Jr.
